Computer-Based Training

Although this term is often used interchangeably with WBT, we usually think of Computer–Based Training (CBT) as eLearning delivered via CD–ROM or Local Area Network.

Project Collage - Bean World 2000Using a vast array of multimedia (animation, simulation, video, narration, sound effects, photographs and illustration) delivered at speeds that maintain students’ interest, CBT is one of the most powerful delivery methods available. Environments can be created, video can be presented in a full–screen mode, and there is no need to worry with installing plug–in technologies. CBT has achieved a high level of maturity, and bandwidth is not an issue. This allows for courses to be delivered with the full force of multimedia.

Project Collage - Solution One - Internet IntegrationOn the down side, when courses are running from a CD or the student’s local hard drive, keeping track of their progress and successes, for reporting purposes, can be difficult and expensive. In addition, updating information may be expensive and time consuming compared to WBT.

Most CD–based courses we’ve created in recent years have actually been hybrid CDs — they take advantage of the best of CD and Web technologies. Hybrid CDs offer all the power, speed and beauty of CD–based delivery and then, when appropriate, “jump” the student to the Web to take advantage of benefits such as up–to–date information and tests that can be easily tracked at a central location.
