Animal Use Refresher Course for Animal Users
Client: Office of Animal Care and Use, NIH
The Office of Animal Care and Use within the National Institutes of Health is committed to disseminating the principles of proper and humane treatment of animals used in laboratory settings. As part of this commitment, they commissioned the following three web-based courses to introduce and reinforce these principles: “Using Animals in Intramural Research,” “Animal Use Refresher Course for Animal Users,” and “Animal Use Refresher Course for Principal Investigators.” Each course lasts approximately one hour.
Tasked with targeting a different audience in each course and designing for cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility, d’Vinci Interactive also enabled each site to track student progress and completion.
Existing text-heavy courses had to be transformed into engaging web-based courses. Our approach was to manipulate images and tastefully blend them with text to make the courses visually interesting.
We created opening animations using Flash, designed all interface elements, manipulated images to make them work effectively with the text, and performed all programming using DHTML and WebDNA. Student tracking includes marking completed sections, producing a printable certificate of completion, and allowing administrative access to all appropriate reports related to students’ progress.
