Sled Dog Patrol
Client: National Park Service
Sled Dog Patrol is a WebRanger activity.*
Did you know that it is the job of some park rangers to drive sled dogs when patrolling a national park in the winter? Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska has been using sled dogs to patrol park boundaries since 1921. The objective of the Sled Dog Patrol activity is to expose children to the team building required to put together an effective dog sled team. In addition, kids can learn the commands the musher gives to control the team.
Presented with a team of dogs, children learn about each dog’s characteristics and which characteristics are best suited to each position on a dog sled team. The children then drag the most appropriate dog to each position in front of the sled.
Once the team is together, the children can take control and use the computer’s mouse to move the team forward, left, and right and to stop.
At the end of the activity, a video is available showing a sled dog team in action as seen from in the sled.
Content and image resources were provided by the National Park Service. d’Vinci Interactive used the content to create storyboards, designed the environment to reflect an Alaska theme, and created custom graphics to complete the experience. All programming was done in Flash.
*WebRangers is a National Park Service website devoted to educating children age six years and older about their national parks. The site includes over 45 activities that involve solving mysteries and puzzles, playing games, and taking part in stories. Children have their own personalized ranger stations which keeps track of the activities they have completed and from which they can share stories and pictures. A system of rewards is associated with completed activities leading up to the WebRanger Patch.
