Swimming for Home
Client: National Park Service
Swimming for Home is a WebRanger activity.*
The objective of this activity is to help Sammy the Salmon swim from the ocean to his river home in order spawn offspring. As he heads upstream into rivers, he must overcome the same obstacles they faced as young fish swimming to the ocean. Chemical pollution, predators, strong currents, and fishing boats are some the dangers that hamper Sammy’s journey. In this game, players help Sammy swim upstream using the arrows on their keyboard to move forward, left, and right, trying to avoid the dangers. They have three tries to make the journey. The obstacles encountered by Sammy teach children about the natural and man-made challenges salmon face as part of their life cycle.
Styled as an online interactive game, d’Vinci Interactive developed the storyboard, created the graphics, programmed using Flash, and incorporated extensive sound effects.
*WebRangers is a National Park Service website devoted to educating children age six years and older about their national parks. The site includes over 45 activities that involve solving mysteries and puzzles, playing games, and taking part in stories. Children have their own personalized ranger stations which keeps track of the activities they have completed and from which they can share stories and pictures. A system of rewards is associated with completed activities leading up to the WebRanger Patch.
