WebRangers Version 3

Client: National Park Service

WebRangers is a National Park Service website devoted to educating about their national parks and the environment in a fun and engaging way. The site includes over 45 unique activities that involve solving mysteries and puzzles, playing games, and taking part in stories.

After experiencing great success with the d’Vinci Interactive-designed site in 2005, we were asked by the National Park Service to bring the user experience to the next level. With funding provided by Best Buy through the National Park Foundation, this version boasts major new additions to the WebRangers site.

The goals of this new version included personalizing the experience, making it easier to find activities of interest, providing encouragement for completing more activities, and adding community-building features. Users can now create their own personal, customizable ranger station, search for activities by multiple criteria including keyword, topic, completed/not completed, or they can spin a spinner and have an activity randomly chosen for them. The community section allows visitors to share their park experiences by uploading and posting park pictures and stories. Most significantly, a dynamic rewards system now keeps track of completed activities. On completion of defined numbers and types of activities, visitors receive rewards that appear in their Ranger Station. When they have completed all activities, they are awarded a physical patch which is sent to them by mail.

Working closely once more with NPS, d’Vinci was careful to maintain a familiar site atmosphere while incorporating new functionality and features. We retooled, and upgraded existing HTML, CSS, and Flash. The sophisticated student tracking/learning management system was created using ColdFusion.

With 48,000 registered members since this version went live, the WebRanger community continues to grow.

There have been hundreds of wonderful comments by visitors to this site. Here are just a couple:

“I’m so impressed with this site. There’s something for everyone, and it’s a lot of fun. I’m a big fan and will be sure to get more involved with our parks! Thanks!”

“I like the Puma Challenge and Sammy the Salmon because they are fun and they taught me how salmon needs to avoid dangerous things like eagles and bears. The Puma Challenge is also fun and taught me how pumas became endangered or threatened. I really like this website.”
